Have you ever needed to match a background in order to be able to finish hooking your rug?

The hardest job is figuring out which dyes to use and just how much of each to use. Work slowly. Add a little dye, check it against a sample, add more dye, and check it etc until you arrive at the right color. Make notes. The first piece that you dye takes the longest because you must work little by little watching the color carefully. Work on sunny days to be able to see the true color.  If the first piece seems a trifle darker than needed, cut it and use it in with the others not all in one place.

Refer to either of my books for suggestions on dyeing and/or matching backgrounds .such as wetting with Synthrapol, amount of vinegar to add and length of time to process

When done, hook some of the newly dyed wool into the old already hooked areas of background even though you may have to pull out a few strips here and there to do this. The strips you pull out remember to scatter them throughout the new areas of hooking as you continue with your rug.

There are many different types of rug hooking, such as, punch needle, latch and traditional rug hooking. I am a traditional rug hooker. Consequently, I use wool fabrics which I cut into different width strips depending on the type of project that I am hooking and pull loops through a backing with a hook that sort of looks like a crochet hook in a fat wooden handle. . Many ruggers use wool in colors as they find them. However, my specialty is dyeing all the colors that I use.
